What is formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling, colorless gas used in making building materials and many household products. It is used in pressed-wood products, such as particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard; glues and adhesives; permanent-press fabrics; paper product coatings; and certain insulation materials. It is also used to make other chemicals.

If there is a high level exposure of formaldehyde:
The major toxic effects caused by acute formaldehyde exposure by inhalation are eye, nose and throat irritation and effects on the nasal cavity. Other effects seen from exposure to high levels of formaldehyde in humans are coughing, wheezing, chest pains and bronchitis. It has been scientifically proven that formaldehyde might be more harmful to elderlies and children.
If there is a lower level exposure of formaldehyde:
It can be irritating to the eyes, nose, throat and the lungs. These sensory irritations are commonly described as itchy, sore or burning sensations. At concentrations higher than those associated with sensory irritation, formaldehyde may contribute to small, reversible effects on lung function.
Some people are more sensitive to formaldehyde effects than others. For the general population, skin exposure to formaldehyde solutions with concentrations of around 1 to 2% is likely to irritate skin.
How is formaldehyde formed?
Wood is known to contain and emit volatile organic compounds including formaldehyde. The emission of formaldehyde from wood increases during its processing to lumber and wood-based panels (i.e., particleboard and fiberboard). This increased emission can be attributed to the processing procedure of wood, which includes drying, pressing, and thermo-hydrolysis.
Is Gabriella trying to lower formaldehyde emissions?
Yes. It is our main goal to provide Hong Kong Household with customized furniture with safe materials!
How is this done?
